Library Governance Activities and Manager Duties

Library management is getting tidier and more comfortable every day. It seems that the library sees that the community's perspective on the library must be changed.

In the past, libraries were synonymous with conventional and boring ways. Now the library has changed its face to be more fresh, fun and practical.

One of the efforts to create a pleasant atmosphere requires skills in library governance. Hemmmm, curious what are the library management activities? Just find the answer here.

What is Library Governance

Library Governance Activities and Manager Duties

Library governance is the library's effort to organize the collection of books to be neater and more categorized. Making it easier for library visitors (librarians) and librarians to easily find the collection of books they are looking for.

Not many people know that library management is not arbitrary. Asa concepts and rules in structuring or managing book collections. For example, books are arranged standing upright, not allowed to be laid out in a sleeping form and stacked up.

It is also necessary to make efforts to prepare the book standing so that the back of the book is visible. Because on the back of the book will store the identity of the book.

Like the title of the book, who is the author, and the publisher. And of course there are still a lot of rules in library governance that are only controlled by librarians.

Library Management Activities

Library governance also has several important activities that must be mastered by librarians. Namely doing inventory, cataloging, physical completion of books and shelving (movement). Now, to find out more, we will discuss one by one below.

1. Inventory

Inventory is the recording of data on library materials to the library collection system. The inventory also includes data verification activities. Where this activity is included in library asset management, as well as knowing the number of collections owned.

Inventory of library materials is indirectly an effort of orderly administration. Yep, administration is very important. Without administration, we don't know how many collections there are, and what books are borrowed, books that haven't been returned and books that are damaged.

The inventory activities include inspection, grouping, tasting and recording. Where this activity is a general activity that must be done to record the collection of books in the library.

2. Cataloging

Meanwhile, what is called cataloging is an activity to classify books. There is something important when cataloging a collection of library materials, which must be done by an experienced professional.

So cataloging should be done by expert librarians. The forms of cataloging are subject cataloging and descriptive cataloging.

a. Subject cataloging

It is said to be subject cataloging when expert librarians classify or classify books based on the subject or content of library materials. For example, psychology books are arranged with psychology books.

When placing it must also be on the same shelf. So books can't be arranged carelessly. And should not be mixed with irrelevant books.

After grouping based on the contents of the library book material, then given a classification number in each book collection. Generally, classification uses the DDC system or the Dewey Decimal Classification (Dewey tenths classification).

The DDC classification function, which makes it easier for librarians to call up information or track down which collection information is stored on which shelves.

b. Cataloging Description

Meanwhile, what is meant by descriptive cataloging is the classification of book collections based on the Anglo-american cataloging rules 2nd edition (AACR2) or Resource description and access (RDA). So this descriptive cataloging is compiled by making bibliographic descriptions.

The goal is the same, to make it easier to call information related to book data. The output form of the description catalog is in the form of a card catalog or Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC).

3. Physical completion of the book

Then there is what is called the physical completion of the book. So at this stage is the stage of making a book completeness card.

Generally in the form of a call number label affixed to the spine of the book. If you have ever borrowed a book from the library, when you open the front and back of the book, you will also find cards and book pockets.

There is a piece of paper that contains a date back sheet. Well, that manufacturing process is called the physical completion of the book.

So every book that has been borrowed, and returned to the library. Then the officer will carry out an inventory or record. When all records are complete, the returned books will be displayed on the collection shelf. The opposite also applies.

4. Shelves

Then what is meant by Shelving? Shelving is the activator or activity of juxtaposing a collection of books based on a system.

Well, the alignment of the book collection is done with the aim of making it easy to find and easy to find by librarians or users.

Of the four main tasks of processing library materials above, it must be mastered. Especially for those of you who want to be part of the librarian.

What is the duty of the librarian

So, what is the duty of the librarian? Talking about assignments, of course there are many tasks, depending on each jobdesk. The following are the duties of a library manager in general.

1. Develop work programs and develop implementation instructions and financial budget plans
2. Organizing the duties of librarians and preparing plans for the needs of librarians. Including providing facilities and infrastructure
3. Guiding motivating and mobilizing library staff
4. Supervise and monitor tasks, related to the use of the budget
5. Evaluate programs, budgets, and infrastructure
6. Make reports on work results, be accountable for budgets and evaluate performance so that it is better
7. Socializing library programs and services to the community

Those are some of the tasks of library governance. Hopefully this little review provides an overview regarding the role and activities of a librarian. Who knows, you are one of the generations that will continue the relay in the world of literacy.
