Assess the Player's Proficiency Level

By using this calculation system, players can find out their level of proficiency and take part in competitions according to their abilities.

For example, players with large handicaps are less likely to play with other players with lower handicaps. However, these players have the possibility to play together with more skilled golfers.

This calculation system can differ from one country to another. This is because there are no definite rules so that each golf club or local golf association has different rules. Then how do you calculate the handicap?

The value of a player's handicaps is calculated based on the difficulty level of the golf course as well as the average of the player's ten best scores or the average score of the player's three rounds. For example, if a player has completed 18 holes in 80, 86 and 95 strokes, his average score would be 80 + 86 + 95 = 261/3 = 87.

Then the average value is reduced by the standard value for completing 18 holes (The Standard Scratch Score). If The Standard Scratch Score (SSS) is 70, then the player receives an initial handicap of 17 (87 – 70 = 17).

For male golfers, the maximum handicap allowed is 28. Meanwhile, for female golfers, the maximum handicap allowed is 36. The better the ability of a golfer, the lower the handicap.

In a golf game played by two golfers with different handicaps, the handicap is the basis for calculation. The chosen golf course is adjusted to the player's ability or the value of the handicap. If in that game a golfer with a handicap of 10 fights a golfer with a handicap of 2.

Then, the winner is determined by reducing the final score of the first person by two, while the score of the second person is reduced by 10. Then the results are compared.

In general, handicaps are divided into five categories, namely as follows:

  • Category 1 : Handicap is worth 5 or less (0.1)
  • Category 2 : Handicap worth 5.5 to 12.4 (0.2)
  • Category 3: handicap worth 12.5 to 20.4 (0.3)
  • Category 4 : Handicap worth 20.5 to 28 (0.4)
  • Category 5: Handicap scores of 28.1 to 36 (for women golfers) (0.5)

In addition to using the number of strokes taken by a golfer in one round of play, the handicap is also influenced by the difficulty level of the golf course used by the player. The use of golf course difficulty levels is intended to make golfers' abilities more accurate.

You can formalize golf handicapping through a golf association such as the United States Golf Association (USGA) by paying a number of cheap rates.

Handicaps may decrease or increase throughout the competition. If a player exceeds their handicap, their handicap will usually be deducted. For example, if a player plays two strokes better than his handicap, then his handicap will be reduced by 2x the value of the handicap in the category he entered.

Conclusion :

The value of the handicap is proportional to the average performance of the player's score throughout the game. The purpose of this handicap is to create a level of play within a group of golfers.
